2014 is here so it’s just about time to talk about current, new and upcoming MMO games. What will be the best MMORPG games of 2014? First up are the games that are currently fully released and playable.
Best MMORPG 2014
Free to Play
In my opinion, the best MMORPG of 2014 is Dungeons & Dragons Neverwinter. I’m only talking about MMOs that are playable right now in English. So stuff that has been launched in Japan or Korea but not in the US are not in the running for this category.
- good classic RPG gaming
- easy enough to start playing but hard to master
- decent amount of players
- lots of things to do
I also particularly like the Foundry that lets players design their own dungeon which they can then share with other players. Genius!
Drakensang Online – a very popular browser-based 3D MMORPG that has more than 5 million registered players worldwide. Drakensang Online combines the best game elements of an action RPG with an MMORPG. The flexible skill system offers players the chance to define their own personal style of play. Players can modify their character’s basic skills through the use of different elements – turning a simple energy ball into a frostball or turn a normal explosive attack into a meteor. A vast sum of quests to complete, items to be found, battles to win, and distant lands to explore are all part of the player’s experience in the kingdom of Duria.
New MMORPG 2014 List
Now let’s take a look at newly launched or open beta MMORPGs.
League of Angels – one of the most anticipated MMORPGs of 2014, League of Angels was officially launched this January 10. LoA is a hybrid turn-based fantasy MMORPG/strategy game. Combining aspects of multiplayer games with a few new twists, League of Angels brings a unique flair to browser gaming – in addition to embarking on engaging quests, dominating in massive PvP and outwitting fierce events, players can also seek out and train angels. Recruit and train allies, craft powerful equipment, and seek out Angels to fight side by side to save the world. This is a good game for those who enjoy strategy MMOs.

Aura Kingdom – a brand new anime-themed action MMORPG. The open beta started on Jan. 7, 2014 and is still ongoing. Aura Kingdom empowers players as Envoys of Gaia, gifted individuals that take the role of one of eight classes. High-level players can also choose a secondary weapon, allowing for hundreds of possible weapon and skill combinations. Players will also scour the world far and wide to find the rarest and strongest Eidolons. These loyal battle partners are sent from the realm of Aura Kingdom to aid Envoys in their quests. During the course of Founder’s Beta, Closed Beta, and Stress Test, players collectively created over 170,000 characters and logged nearly 1,000,000 hours in the game. Now everyone has access to the open beta.

Lucent Heart – open beta started on January 10, 2014 and this new free to play MMORPG has an interesting game mechanic that puts player relationships at the center of its gameplay. This is an MMO that has been designed from the ground up to provide players with extraordinary depth, lore, characterization, fun and adventure coupled with an all encompassing social experience. The mythical realm of Acadia forms the backdrop for many quests, social activities and epic boss fights.
As a player develops their character and skills, they are quickly encouraged to visit Cupid, whose matchmaking system asks players to take a personality test which matches star signs and characteristics to other players. Once matched, players are encouraged to team up, socialise in-game and get to know each other. If they choose, they can advance their relationship to enjoy an array of added benefits including improved experience gains and buffs when teaming together, a selection of new emotes which add additional powerful buffs and advantages, and access to new dungeon instances and unique special items. Having the right selection of partners and team-mates to play with enhances the in-game dynamic, making gameplay more enjoyable and more memorable.

Pay to Play MMORPG 2014
For pay to play MMORPGs I think there is really only one MMORPG that is worth mentioning and that is clearly Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. There aren’t that many p2p MMOs so a new big-budget release like FF XIV is always welcome.
- interesting Final Fantasy storyline, setting and creatures/NPCs
- awesome graphics and HD cut scenes
- player-run Free Companies
- flexible class system
- Final Fantasy music
- also available for the PS3 and PS4
Buy to Play MMORPG 2014
The Secret World – Buy to play in this case means games that you have to buy but have no monthly subscription. My personal favorite is actually The Secret World, primarily because I love the concept of secret conspiracies and a dark underworld that exists alongside our ordinary, everyday world. TSW is practically the only MMO that is set in the modern-day world. It’s dripping atmosphere and plot plus I love that I only need to buy it once because there is no monthly subscription.
Guild Wars 2 – However, there is also another notable buy to play MMORPG: Guild Wars 2. GW2 is a best-selling game that is actually great value for money because it has tons of content, amazing graphics and can be played solo or socially.
Defiance – this game is unusual in that it is a third-person shooter that is played in a persistent open world that has no loading screens between zones. It’s pretty fun and if you love intense action combat then this might be the game for you. Defiance is also available on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PC. The last time I looked at it, the PC download version of the game was going for less than $10 so its amazingly good value for money.

Best MOBA Game 2014
Hmmm, I really am not an expert on MOBA gaming but there was one game that caught my eye. It’s still in its open beta testing phase but shows a lot of promise. Prime World is a hybrid RPG/MOBA game that also features castle building. It’s been pretty fun so far.
Upcoming MMORPG 2014 List
In no particular order, the most anticipated upcoming MMO games are:
The Elder Scrolls Online (TESO) PC, Xbox One and PS4
After 20 years of best-selling, award-winning fantasy role-playing games, the Elder Scrolls series goes online. The game reportedly looks and plays like Skyrim. TESO will feature real-time targeting and strategic attacks and blocks, one massive connected world (not split into different servers), dungeons, quests, and massive player versus player battles.
The man behind Wing Commander, Privateer, Strike Commander, Starlancer, Freelancer and more has assembled an elite team of industry veterans to build the Space Sim: Star Citizen.
Step out of the pilot’s seat for the first time: traverse your cockpit, explore planets and cities and even engage in first person boarding actions to take over other ships, bases and orbital platforms. Play with your friends on your wing, watching your back or manning turrets on your ship all in a massive universe that evolves with players instead of against them.

Destiny (PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One)
Destiny is an action game from the creators of Halo, set in a mysterious future. Create a unique and powerful character, customize the way you look and fight, and explore what remains of our solar system.
Destiny features a compelling storyline, competitive multiplayer, cooperative gameplay choices, wide open public combat destinations, and third-person community spaces where you can repair and rearm before going out on your next adventure.
EverQuest Next is a Free to Play, next-generation sandbox MMO built on the ForgeLight Engine. It is a complete reimagining of the EverQuest Franchise. Core features:
- Full Destructibility — Everything in EverQuest Next can be destroyed. Destroy the ground beneath your enemy’s feet — or crush him under an avalanche you created.
- Permanent Change — The land of Norrath changes every day, based on the actions of all players… including you. Cities rise and fall, kings live and die, even the gods may change.
- A Life of Consequence — Your choices will rule your destiny. Do you save a villager’s burning farm or choose to do nothing? Do you clear orc camps away from Qeynos or help them destroy the city? You will make your own story — and shape the story for those who follow you.
- A Class Revolution — Our character classes are streamlined and designed to be mixed. Want to be a teleporting rogue or a backstabbing barbarian? The choice is yours!
Camelot Unchained is a subscription-based, RvR (real vs realm)-focused MMORPG. All leveling will come from engaging in the game’s RvR-based systems, whether by fighting other players, capturing objectives, and/or crafting objects to help in RvR. There will be NPCs but you cannot use them to level your character. No progression in PvE (player vs. environment), loot drops or other such systems are currently planned.
Wildstar is an upcoming MMORPG that has stylized graphics and exciting gameplay. Set on a wondrous alien world, WildStar delivers a wild and mysterious adventure among the ruins of an advanced civilization – allowing you to play the way you want to play while experiencing an unprecedented level of exploration and discovery.
