If you are looking for free RTS games for the PC then you are in luck. 2011 is the year of dozens of good f2p online multiplayer real time strategy games.
The basic idea behind MMORTS games is simple but fun. Players will typically take control of an area, gather resources, build infrastructures, research technologies and (most importantly) train their people for various types of professions depending on the setting of the game. Games set in Ancient Rome, for example, would logically train troops from that era like Hoplites, Toxotes, Hippikons, etc.
While single-player RTS PC games are fun, multiplayer and MMO games takes it to a whole different level. Playing with real human players is generally more challenging and fun than playing with a computer opponent. Playing a massively multiplayer online RTS (aka MMORTS) means using strategy in a persistent world where your units, buildings and resources can be built up over a longer period of time as well as playing with thousands of other players. This requires patience and also cooperative play – MMORTS gaming is often based on both friendly alliances and warring with groups of players, not individual ones.
Anyway, here are MMO World’s top picks for some new 2011 MMORTS.
Free RTS Games for PC – New 2011 MMORTS
Global Warfare – released in May and available on Facebook, Global Warfare transports you to a near-future world of geopolitical turmoil, a future where formal governments have been dissolved in favor of a new world order of warring city-states.
Global Warfare features deep gameplay in a highly social setting and is the first MMOSG to bring a modern military warfare theme to social networks. Player alliances are the glue that binds together city-states with common interests, whether for peace or all-out war. In the game, powerful generals vie for control as they compete for territory and strategic resources such as titanium, gather artifact sets for crafting new items, and band together into strong alliances.
Unlike casual social games designed for short bursts of play alternating with out-of-game sharing requests, Global Warfare offers deeper, more strategic, engaging and extended gameplay. Synchronous gameplay allows players to interact with each other and the game world in real time. Players can use chat to synchronize waves of infantry, tank, and air force attacks to hit an enemy city at once or coordinate resource allocation with their alliance.
Modern Military Warfare that Features:
- Balanced combat system, featuring dozens of offensive and defensive military units, each with unique strengths and weaknesses. This allows players to focus their attacks strategically for maximum damage, with no single unit dominating every situation.
- Strategic Resources: The competition for resources and power creates an atmosphere of competitive action as well as social interaction as thousands of players battle with and against each other in real time.
- In-game missions guide gamers forward and provide a reward system as they level up, continually unlocking new powers and abilities for global domination.
Setting: Modern/Futuristic Age, with Advanced Weaponry like Guns and Tanks

Iron Grip: Marauders – a 3D browser-based MMO strategy game (MMOSG). In Iron Grip: Marauders you’ll assume command of a horde of mercenary pirates called marauders. The player has a simple goal: conquer and plunder villages for resources, then use the acquired supplies to obtain stronger units, and the conquered towns to expand your own stronghold.
The main advantage of Iron Grip: Marauders is that the battles are experienced in true real-time. Whereas the building and researching of units takes place in the control panel, the actual combat take place in a separate window for the player to enjoy tactical battles in spectacular 3D where they can direct each unit individually on the battlefield. This is a genre first for browser MMORTS games.
Another important aspect of the game is its setting which, unlike most RTS games, is neither fantasy nor futuristic science fiction. The setting is retro-futuristic, meaning the world has an old, historical visual look even though it has many elements of futuristic high technology like airships.
Setting: Retro-Futuristic Dieselpunk
Platform: Browser-Based Online Game
