What Does 2012 Hold for MMO Gaming?

Although we here at MMO Worlds are not in the habit of predicting the future, 2012 is quite near and we can clearly see what the future holds for MMO games. So what’s in store for the MMO gaming industry and for us as free MMORPG fans?

Lots and lots of new games

Just to name a few the upcoming games are Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR), possibly Guild Wars 2 (GW2), The Secret World, the Neverwinter MMO, Torchlight MMO, Sevencore, ArcheAge, and so forth. This is obviously good news for MMO players. In our recent post about the best free 2012 MMO games, we talked a bit about these upcoming games that are currently under development. These MMORPGs have an announced release date of 2012.

With all these new titles gamers will have a good choice of different settings, genres and pricing options.

Traditional subscriptions are out, free to play is in

Like it or not, the writing on the wall is clear. The traditional subscription pay to play pricing model is going to be supplanted by the freemium or free to play.

In fact, this development is so apparent that even the bigwigs of the industry have accepted it as fact. In a recent interview at gamesindustry.biz, John Smedley, CEO of Sony Online Entertainment, has gone on record to say that he believes that “free-to-play is going to become the predominant model in online gaming for a lot of reasons” and “Free-to-play is here to stay. I really think we’re going to see a lot more AAA games going with this fantastic business model.”

So there you have it straight from one of the top men in the MMO games industry. F2p is the way to go for 2012.

MMORPG multi-platform and mobile gaming

To be perfectly honest, there aren’t many multi-platform MMOs around. There’s Conquer Online, an old school game, which is due to be out for PC, Mac, iPad and Facebook but most games are not so flexible. Nonetheless, as 2012 approaches, game developers are gearing up to release new titles for all platforms.

Mobile gaming is on the rise as many owners of mobile phones, smartphones, and especially for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad actively looking for new titles to play. It’s a safe bet that game developers will be scrambling to fill this need in the coming year.
